Majid Majidi’s award-winning film ‘Sun Children’ has been introduced as Iran’s representative to the Academy Awards 2021 in the US.

The film made way to the Oscars after winning awards at the Venice International Film Festival in Italy.

The film has won several accolades such as the best screenplay and best film at Fajr fest in Iran. The new offering of Majidi also grabbed the Magic Lantern at the 77th Venice fest in Italy.

'Sun Children' is about 12-year-old Ali and his three friends who do small jobs and petty crimes to survive and support their families. In a timely turn of events, Ali is told to find a hidden underground treasure. However, in order to gain access to the tunnel where the treasure is buried, Ali and his gang have to enroll at the Sun School, a charitable institution that tries to educate street kids and child laborers.

Teenage actor Rouhollah Zamani has won Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice fest for his portrayal of an impressive role in Majidi's film.

The 93rd Academy Awards is set to take place on 25 April 2021, two months later than originally planned due to COVID-19’s effects on the industry.
